Here's our most recent Los Angeles Electrician Blog post:

54.5 Miles Per Hour Is Great — But What About Electric Cars!

Recently, the Obama administration adopted a new gas mileage standard for cars made in America — 54.5 mpg by 2030. That’s a big jump. The most recent figures — 2009 — show that average gas mileage for American cars manufactured in that year was 33 mpg.

Well, the new standard is good for reducing dependence on foreign oil and good for our pocket books — it’s supposed to save us $45 billion annually at the gas pumps. It’s probably also good for American competitiveness in export sales — people in other countries seem even more concerned about gas mileage than we have become. The 2009 cars we imported got 35 mpg, 2 miles better than American-made.

Most Americans support the idea of upping gas mileage. Consumer Reports found in a recent survey that 77% of Americans feel that Detroit should produce more fuel-efficient cars and the government should increase mileage standards. So, everything’s good….

BUT wouldn’t it be better to run our cars on ZERO gasoline? Wouldn’t it be better to go electric? I’m not talking about the government telling Detroit to manufacture only electric vehicles (EVs). But when we buy our next car, if we made it electric or hybrid, we would be asking Detroit to manufacture the kind of cars that emit zero pollution and don’t eat any Middle Eastern oil.

You might be thinking — yes, but where does the electricity come from? That’s a good point, but here’s the neat thing about electricity — it can come from clean sources. In Los Angeles, 40% of the electricity supplied by the Department of Water and Power is generated from coal — not clean. But that means that 60% is generated from cleaner sources like natural gas, hydropower, nuclear, geothermal, wind, and solar. DWP expects that by 2020, 0% will be generated from coal and 40% will be generated from renewables. Those are the facts about electricity in L.A. — and, I assure you, my being an electrician doesn’t give me any bias on the subject!

My next car will be an EV. In the meantime I’m lending my support to the cause by installing EV chargers for those in L.A. who are beating me to it and have already bought their electric cars.

About

Los Angeles is one of the most culturally diverse cities in the country. About 40% of our population speaks Spanish at home. L.A. also has its own Koreatown, Little Tokyo, Little Armenia, the Fairfax Jewish area, and many other ethnic enclaves.

The population of the city itself is a little over 4 million people while that of Los Angeles County is a little over 10 million. Los Angeles County includes over 4,752 square miles of land and water. It includes 88 cities, among others: the City of Los Angeles, Burbank, Malibu, Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Long Beach, Pasadena, Monterey Park, San Marino, Century City, Santa Monica, and Torrance.

Sports

Los Angeles is a World Class city when it comes to teams and sporting events. Los Angeles teams include the Los Angeles Dodgers (baseball), Los Angeles Lakers (basketball), Los Angeles Clippers (basketball), Los Angeles Kings (ice hockey), LA Galaxy (soccer), UCLA Bruins (college football), and USC Trojans (college football).

Los Angeles is the scene of the one of the biggest cross-town college football rivalries, the USC Trojans versus the UCLA Bruins.

Los Angeles is also home to the Pasadena Rose Bowl, the stadium where every New Year's Day, two of the top national professional football teams match up in the bowl game that's The Grand-Daddy of Them All. This game comes on the heels of the famed Rose Parade. The parade is a procession of floats decorated with millions of flower petals. It also features celebrities, marching bands, dancers, and fireworks.

Los Angeles hosts sporting events at a number of stadiums including Dodgers Stadium, Staples Center, and the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, home to the USC Trojans football team.

Arts

The part of the City of Los Angeles that the world knows as "Hollywood," is still the center of English-language film-making. As you drive through Hollywood and also North Hollywood and through the City of Burbank, you can see the large warehouse-like studios where movies and TV shows are produced and even today, shot.

Many movie stars make their homes in Los Angeles County, especially in the part of the City of L.A. called "the Hollywood Hills," and the cities of Malibu, Beverly Hills, and Bel Aire. Of course, Los Angeles also hosts the annual Academy Awards show which is hosted by L.A.'s Kodak Theater and broadcast to millions around the world.

Little Theaters dot our neighborhoods. World-class plays and concerts are performed in the many larger theaters and auditoriums throughout L.A. These include among others:

Becoming a Los Angeles Electrician

If you aren't an electrician, but would like to become one, you can get started in a variety of ways. One way is to enroll in an electrical apprenticeship program. In an electrical apprenticeship program, you work and study for several years while being paid a limited amount. Click here for information about electrical apprenticeship programs in Los Angeles.

You can also start by going to a trade school for electricians. Click here to find a trade school for electricians in L.A.

Some electricians get their start by finding a job as an electrical helper that requires no experience or training. But experience and study of electrical theory and the National Electrical Code are necessary for the next step - becoming a journeyman, an electrician who can work without immediate supervision.

If you want to run your own business as a Los Angeles electrician, you'll need to become a licensed electrical contractor. This requires passing a licensing exam administered by the Contractors State License Board. Many special schools offer assistance in studying for the licensing exam. Once you are an electrical contractor, you can be your own boss and earn a higher income.
