Yes, with anything electrical, there is some hazard. CFLs have a few hazards associated with them. CFLs emit some UV light -- the kind that causes sunburn. However, very little compared to being out in the sun. For someone with extreme sensitivity to U.V., they might want to check into special CFLs that emit even less than regular CFLs.

Whenever a bulb breaks, whether incandescent or CFL, careful handling is required. CFLs add an issue additional to broken glass -- each includes a bit of mercury. When cleaning up a broken CFL, put on household cleaning gloves -- any type will do. Mercury is poisonous and must be kept off your skin. It will bead up, which eases disposal. Dispose of the broken glass and mercury in the garbage. If you are disposing of a number of CFLs, dispose of them as you would hazardous waste in your locality.

CFLs provide higher safety than incandescents in one regard. They don't get as hot as incandescents.

If you ask yourself, when is the last time that I heard of someone who was hurt by a light bulb, that will help you judge how dangerous either incandescents or CFLs are.

that's good advice. a recent statistic i read said that 18.6% of house fires start from wires, fuse boxes, outlet boxes, etc. Best to go with a licensed electrician!

You hit it right on the head. When you run into electrical trouble, you need to call a professional. Do not attempt to do electrical repairs yourself unless you are an electrician.

Dear Tony,
Sorry we don't have an electrician to refer you to. Can only suggest that you Google on something like: EMF Los Angeles.
I wish you luck with this.
Kim
