What is EV Charging?
Electrical Vehicle charging, or EV charging, is an element that supplies electricity to recharge your electric vehicle. This is also known as an EV charging station or an electric recharging point. The popularity of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles have grown so there is a growing need for EV chargers for homes to be installed.
You may be wondering how long it takes to charge an electric vehicle. The answer really depends on the set up in your home, your electric vehicle, and what you use to charge your vehicle. When it comes to plugging in, there are two types of residential EV charging: Level 1 and Level 2.
Level 1 Charging
With Level 1 charging you plug your car right into a household outlet. There is a cord that comes with your vehicle that you can plug into an outlet in your home. This seems like a great option, however, your car will charge at a very slow speed. As low as 4.5 miles per hour of charge, in fact. Your car will rarely get a full charge if it’s completely empty. Consider if you have a 40 mile drive per day. You may try to charge overnight but it will take a full 9 hours to get a complete charge. As long as your commute isn’t too long, this might be an option for you.
Level 2 Charging
Level 2 charging provides you with a faster charge but you will need an electrician to install either an EV wall mount or a NEMA 14-50 outlet like those used for your dryer or oven. With Level 2 charging you can get up to about 26 miles of range per hour depending on different factors. Even though this may be more expensive than Level 1 charging, it can charge your car at faster speeds and might be worth it if you have a larger commute.
