Going green on your vehicle recently got a lot better with Tesla introducing a 3RD Generation Wall Connector.
This all-new product made its debut early in January, almost like a New Year gift to both old and new Tesla users. Before this product, Tesla owners enjoyed the efficiency of the Gen 2 wall connector. If you are up for trying out a smart charger, then you might want to replace your Gen 2 home charger with Gen 3.
New Product New features
The amazing thing about this home wall charger is that unlike other upgrades of other products, Tesla didn’t just add a few new things to their last product the Gen 2. They unveiled a completely new product with its own features and capability.
The Gen 3 Tesla Wall Connector shows off its difference, starting from the appearance. It has a clean and compact look and a new white glass face plate. It is noticeably thinner, and lightweight, especially compared to the former charger.
You would also quickly observe that the Gen 3 charger is shorter than other Tesla chargers. It is 18-feet, which is a significant cut away from the heavy 24-feet Gen 2 charger and other versions.
Some say this is good for convenience and comfortability, but when you consider that the standard size 2-car garage is 24 by 24 inches, it seems like the Gen 3 charger is a bit short for convenience. This may also be the only drawback this new product offers. Chances are, Tesla will attend to this soon.
When it comes to power, the Gen 2 charger could deliver up to 80 amps. Now, the new Gen 3 is limited to 48 amps. While it might seem like a long way to go, this significant drop makes sense because Tesla no longer produces electric vehicles that require more than 48 amps. The same goes for other electric car brands.
Tesla Gen 3 wall charger can also load-share up to 16 devices when Gen 2 could load-share to only 4 connected units.
Tesla drivers also have the new ‘smart charger’ concept to be thrilled about. This 3rd Gen Tesla wall connector has a Wi-Fi connectivity feature. You can connect the unit to your phone, get over-the-air updates, and explore remote control. More smart features are certainly in the works.
